Lighting Harrow’s Places of Worship

In 2023, the London Borough of Harrow, commissioned Schréder to highlight Harrow’s heritage ahead of the Kings Coronation. This project is part of the wider “Restoring Pride in Harrow” initiative, which aims to regenerate the borough, making it safer, more vibrant, and prosperous. The goal was to transform Harrow’s high streets and religious landmarks into shining beacons of heritage and community spirit.
 

Architectural lighting solutions to enhance Harrow’s heritage ahead of the King’s Coronation

With the coronation due to take place on 6th May 2023, the deadline was extremely tight. The lighting design had to align with Harrow’s main objectives which are to:

• increase footfall and dwell time on the high streets to make Harrow a destination for shopping and socialising, thereby supporting local businesses;
• foster a sense of pride among residents by beautifying public spaces and key landmarks;
• contribute to a safer and more inviting environment, encouraging more use of public spaces during the evening.

Our team assessed the landmarks in the area, looking at how they are used by the local community, and drew up a comprehensive plan to design, deliver and install the architectural lighting that would enhance the borough’s appeal in time for the celebrations.
 

Dynamic lighting for iconic landmarks

Each place of worship presents unique architectural features that required tailored lighting solutions. The VALINTA CURVE, known for its energy-efficient performance, was selected for its adaptability and power to create dramatic visual effects.

Just over 55 of these state-of-the-art luminaires fitted with a mixture of RGBcW (Red, Green, Blue, Cool White) and white LEDs were installed, allowing each building to be lit in different colours for different events and religious festivals.

The Shree Kutch Satsang Swaminarayan Temple is illuminated by 11 VALINTA CURVE Midi (RGBcW) luminaires highlighting the temple’s intricate architecture.

The grand exterior of the Zoroastrian Centre is illuminated by 8 VALINTA CURVE Maxi (RGBcW) luminaires.

Harrow Central Mosque & Masood Islamic Centre is lit by 26 VALINTA CURVE Midi (RGBcW) which bring vibrancy and light to the mosque’s façade.

Six VALINTA CURVE Midi showcase the unique features of the Pinner Synagogue.

St Mary’s Church is brought to life at night by 3 VALINTA CURVE Maxi luminaires fitted with neutral white LEDs that give a warm, welcoming glow to the entrance.

A historic symbol of the area, the classic features of High Street Clock Tower, are now visible at night thanks to a combination of 3 VALINTA CURVE Mini, one TERRA MIDI and one INDU FLOOD GEN2 floodlights, fitted with neutral white LEDs.

For all of the sites, a DMX-connected control system and web-based user interface allowed easy management of the lighting systems, enabling the customer to create dynamic displays with swirls of colours that can be adapted to any event or occasion.

On Coronation Day, all of the buildings fitted with RGBcW LEDs, proudly displayed the colours of the British flag - red, white and blue - to celebrate the nation's heritage.
 

Revitalising spaces and celebrating community diversity

By enhancing the visibility of these landmarks and creating more inviting public spaces, the project has increased footfall and supported local businesses. The dynamic, colour-changing capabilities allow the religious sites to reflect the diversity of Harrow’s community during events and celebrations, helping to restore pride in the borough and ensuring that these landmarks will continue to shine for years to come.

The local council can use the flexible lighting systems to bathe the landmarks in customised colours to celebrate annual calendar events, creating an engaging nightscape for the community.
