Duque da Terceira Garden - Azores
Efficient and elegant lighting solution to enhance both the natural beauty and cultural significance of this green oasis
The Duque da Terceira Garden is part of the historic centre of Angra do Heroísmo, classified as World Heritage by UNESCO, on Terceira Island in the Azores. Considered one of the most beautiful gardens in the archipelago, it is built on platforms connected by sloping paths and is home to a large and varied range of beautiful and amazing flora from subtropical and tropical regions.
In 2019, the local authorities of Angra do Heroísmo decided to expand the gardens by 1.5 hectares to create new spaces for recreation and relaxation. The new space, named Caminho Rui Teles Palhinha after the renowned botanist, teacher and mayor, born in Angra in the first half of the 20th century, includes an area dedicated to aromatic plants with tea and coffee beds and various flowers for pollinators, boosting the biodiversity. It also includes an open grass plaza to host shows and events and create a vibrant community focused space.
As part of the project, the local authorities also commissioned the Projetos de Engenharia (Engineering Projects) office to develop a modern and efficient lighting plan that would enhance the landscape and reflect the cultural significance of the park.
In collaboration with Schréder, Projetos de Engenharia proposed a low maintenance LED luminaire made of high-quality materials for durability and longevity.
The very elegant and traditional Valentino luminaires on Blenheim columns light the paths, reflecting the gardens cultural heritage. They are painted in the same colour as the many benches placed throughout the gardens to encourage visitors to relax and spend time in the park.
Fitted with warm white LEDs, the Valentino delivers a soft white light to ensure a clear and visible pathway for a safe and welcoming nocturnal atmosphere. Enyo floodlights were fitted on the columns near the stage area to draw attention to events taking place while Neos floodlights were installed to light the perimeter.
The new lighting, which combines high energy efficiency with high levels of visual comfort for visitors, has contributed to creating a superb public space, with a positive carbon impact on the town.
