Cranbourne Harness Track – LED Lighting Transformation
Modern LED Solutions for Enhanced Performance, Efficiency, and Broadcast Quality
Objective:
To replace the outdated metal halide lighting system with a modern LED-based solution to improve illumination quality, reduce maintenance costs, and enhance the visual experience for both live events and television broadcasts.
Challenges:
Aging Metal Halide System: The original system, installed in 1995, relied on GE Ultra Sport 2kW metal halide floodlights. Over time, these lights experienced a high failure rate, and spare parts became increasingly difficult to source locally, leading to escalating maintenance costs.
Inconsistent Lighting: The metal halide system no longer provided consistent, high-quality illumination across the track, impacting both the safety and visual appeal of the venue.
Operational Costs: Frequent maintenance interventions and the energy consumption of the old system increased the track’s operational expenses.
Solution:
The project introduced a new LED lighting system that employs 202 Schreder Briteline and Raptor LED floodlights. These lights were distributed across 29 high masts ranging in height from 15m to 25m, and a 22m roof gantry, ensuring optimal light distribution.
Energy Efficiency: Schreder’s LED technology significantly reduces energy consumption compared to the old metal halide lights.
Reliability: The new system provides a robust and durable lighting solution, minimising the need for maintenance and part replacements.
Uniformity and Quality: The LED floodlights offer high and uniform illuminance, enhancing visibility across the track for everyone. The lighting also performs exceptionally well on television, providing a sharp, clear display for broadcast audiences.
Project Outcomes:
Enhanced Lighting Performance: The LED system provides consistent, high-quality illumination across the entire track. This improves visibility for racing events, benefiting both participants and spectators.
Cost Savings: The client has seen a significant reduction in maintenance and operational costs due to the LED system’s long lifespan and lower energy usage.
Improved Aesthetic Appeal: The new lighting not only enhances the user experience in person but also looks impressive on television, improving the track's broadcast quality.
