BRITELINE GEN2 improves user experience with less operating costs for Vlissingen sports facilities
Vlissingen in Zeeland is a city known for its rich maritime history and vibrant community. Sport plays an important role in the local community and the local council funds a wide range of sports clubs operating at different facilities throughout the city. From football and hockey to athletics and korfball, Vlissingen's sports infrastructure supports an active and healthy lifestyle for both young and old.
Committed to being more sustainable and reducing its energy consumption, the council decided to upgrade the lighting at nine sports facilities by introducing energy-efficient LED technology. As part of the process of creating more sustainable public facilities, they also decided to analyse the different sites to see if it was possible to reduce the number of luminaires without compromising on safety. The new sports lighting had a number of objectives:
- replace all the traditional floodlights with more energy-efficient technology;
- reduce energy consumption and operating costs for the sports clubs;
- improve user-friendliness by implementing an advanced control system;
- provide lighting that meets the requirements of the different sports federations and provides optimum returns in terms of light output and uniformity.
Working together to accelerate a more sustainable future
Vlissingen Council aims to become energy neutral by 2030. With this in mind, it wanted to accelerate the modernisation of the energy-guzzling lighting in its sports facilities. John Waardenburg, Project Leader for Vlissingen City Council explains, “After a market analysis, we chose Schréder as our lighting supplier because we had a good experience with the technology, quality, price and after-sales service.”
Before delivering any LED floodlights, we calculated the lighting levels required for the different pitches. It was important to meet the stringent requirements of the various sports federations such as the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) and the Royal Dutch Hockey Association (KNHB) and to provide lighting with optimum light output and uniformity. We proposed BRITELINE GEN2 floodlights that could be installed on the existing masts with both single and double modules.
Managed by the Ralph control system, the new LED floodlights provide a sports lighting solution that not only optimises energy consumption but also reduces costs for sports clubs.
Smooth installation process
The installation was carried out by Oostendorp Nederland, who mounted and adjusted the floodlights and commissioned the sports lighting system. Thanks to the close collaboration between Schréder, Oostendorp Nederland and Vlissingen City Council, the project went smoothly.

Application(s)
The installation of the BRITELINE floodlights went well. They are easy to mount and align and meet the requirements we set out in advance.
Once all the floodlights had been installed in all the different sports facilities, the lighting systems were tested and checked. The results showed that the measured lighting levels exceeded the calculations.
Working with Oostendorp was efficient, we were able to communicate directly with each other and were able to make changes without any delays.
Sports lighting where it should be
The project presented some minor challenges, such as adjusting the lighting to specific locations to avoid light pollution. Working with Oostendorp Nederland, the lighting was measured and adjusted to only light the areas where it is needed.
Light uniformity is very important. When we measured the lighting levels on the hockey pitches, we were pleasantly surprised by the high level of uniformity.
Together with Vlissingen City Council, Oostendorp Nederland organised an information evening for all sports clubs to teach them how to use the Ralph app.
Sports lighting for a whole new ballgame
In total, more than 100 sports LED floodlights were installed on 9 sports fields, bringing multiple benefits including:
- reduced costs: the low-energy BRITELINE GEN2 LED luminaires and the new control system have significantly reduced energy consumption
- easy-to-use lighting system: the different clubs can easily adapt the lighting both manually and automatically via schedules and timers
- more sustainable infrastructure: thanks to the robust design of the floodlights (IK 10) which will ensure performance for many years to come, maintenance costs will be lower. As the floodlights were installed on the existing masts, resources have also been saved.
By upgrading the sports lighting in its various sports facilities with BRITELINE GEN2 luminaires, the city of Vlissingen has improved the user experience and reduced costs with a more sustainable infrastructure.
