SHUFFLE smart poles integrate several services to enhance the feeling of security on campus

Founded in 1843, Nottingham Trent University (NTU) is one of the most influential higher education institutions in the UK, with over 40,000 students based on five sites. It was awarded The Times and The Sunday Times Modern University of the Year 2023 and the Best UK University for Student Life in the WhatUni Choice Awards 2022.

Enhance safety after dark

The safety of all students and colleagues on campus is a priority for the University. It ensures that all pedestrian routes on campuses are well-lit, regularly patrolled by security teams and closely monitored using an extensive CCTV network.

In 2021, the University decided to install intercoms with voice and video in selected locations on three of its five campuses as part of a scheme to improve safety and well-being across the campuses and to provide a visible reassurance to students, staff and visitors. The SHUFFLE multi-functional smart pole was the ideal solution.

A multi-functional pole to integrate all needs

The SHUFFLE smart pole can integrate up to 5 modules to meet the different needs of landscapes. Nottingham Trent University chose to install SHUFFLE poles with:

  • a light module utilising our wide range of optics to light the areas;
  • a beacon integrated into the light module so the pole and intercom can be easily spotted from a distance;
  • a camera bracket with a 360° camera for optimal visibility;
  • a two-way audio-video intercom.

An intercom for that extra sense of security

Elegantly integrated into the pole, the intercom features voice and video links. It works seamlessly with the University’s existing system, enabling students, visitors and staff to communicate with the security teams so they can seek immediate help if necessary.

Urban lighting that fits its environment

The SHUFFLE poles are fitted with LEDs of different colour temperatures to satisfy the needs of the various landscapes where they are installed. In the heart of the city centre, the light modules have neutral white LEDs (4,000K) to deliver a bright light that is easily distinguished on busy streets and squares.

Lighting with minimal effect on nature

The Clifton campus, which is located out of the city centre, is near native woodland. NTU is ranked 2nd most sustainable university in the world in the 2022 UI Green Metric University World Rankings and takes managing their green spaces seriously. The SHUFFLE poles installed here have been equipped with warm white LEDs (2,700K) so they do not disturb bat roosting sites or foraging activities.

Smart lighting for tomorrow’s needs

All of the SHUFFLE poles at NTU are controlled by the Schréder EXEDRA lighting management system. It will enable the University to quickly detect any potential failures and optimise operations so it is cheaper to maintain.

Schréder EXEDRA also gives the University the option of integrating even more services in the future as it is an open and interoperable system.

And the eye-catching branding on the pole!

In addition to the lighting which ensures that the intercom is visible at all times after dark, the SHUFFLE gave the University the opportunity to brand the pole so it could be easily identified by students and staff. The SHUFFLEs have been supplied in two RAL colours - dark grey for the pole and pink for the modules - to reflect the University colours. The poles also feature the University logo.

A holistic approach

We were delighted to work with the teams at the University to deliver a customised system that meets all their needs today. Features such as integrating the intercom into the University’s existing system show how the SHUFFLE can be easily adapted into our customer’s current choices, rather than requiring further investment in different systems

Our Schréder STUDIO team also did some redesign to incorporate earthing tabs and backboards for NTU. This is all part of our service to shape environments that truly meet people’s daily needs.
