Barangaroo Metro Station

Multi-functional SHUFFLE poles enhance safety, connectivity and aesthetics while providing future-ready infrastructure

Barangaroo Metro Station, which opened in 2024, was built to improve access to the Barangaroo and Walsh Bay Arts and Culture precincts in Sydney and drive urban regeneration in the area. It was designed to be a contemporary, safe, visually comfortable and architecturally integrated station.

The passenger experience was a key part of the design process, from arrival to departure. Metro Trains Sydney wanted the plaza leading to the entrance to be a welcoming and dynamic outdoor space where people could relax and enjoy the waterfront. The goal was to build a future-ready hub with infrastructure that would enhance openness, safety and connectivity.

The multi-functional SHUFFLE pole was the perfect solution.

A multi-functional pole for a high-quality public realm

A total of 18 SHUFFLE smart poles were installed, each integrating multiple features to create a high-quality public space. They include:

  • 360° lighting modules and 180° modules for targeted illumination;
  • WiFi hotspots for public connectivity;
  • external camera brackets for surveillance;
  • spacers and electrical boxes to connect services in the future.

A safe and welcoming space

The SHUFFLEs deliver a soft white light at night with low energy consumption to safely guide the thousands of people who pass through every day on their way to the station. The 180° lighting modules highlight specific architecture and objects like the benches. The poles create a welcoming ambiance for those looking to explore the waterfront or pass time in the precinct.

Accessibility for all

Free WiFi is available through the SHUFFLE poles as part of a broader project to enhance the experience for visitors and workers in the area. The SHUFFLE poles provide a reliable and secure infrastructure for the access points, ensuring the necessary bandwidth and quality of service for connectivity 24/7.

Openness and views

By integrating multiple features in one poles, the SHUFFLEs have decluttered the visual landscape, in line with the open and light design of the Barangaroo station.

The refined design of the SHUFFLE integrates the plaza seamlessly and reflects the station’s contemporary aesthetic.

Sustainable infrastructure

Sustainability was a priority from the start, from the low carbon concrete and recycled materials used to the lighting. Sustainability practices were implemented to reduce emissions and waste. The energy-efficient SHUFFLE will save energy, reduce CO2 emissions and minimise maintenance operations. By integrating the different features in one pole, the amount of materials used was also reduced.

Moreover, the SHUFFLE poles are ready to integrate other technologies in the near future to meet the needs of commuters and the local community.

We are delighted to have worked on this project which has enhanced safety and boosted accessibility to the station and had a positive impact on the daily lives of Sydney’s growing population. SHUFFLE's future-ready design is a testament to our commitment to creating sustainable, people-centred solutions for communities.
