Battery Park - V&A Waterfront

ZELA provides energy-efficient lighting solution to ensure the community can enjoy this park after dark, all year long

Battery Park is an urban park that connects Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront with the central business district. Opened in November 2018, the 12,000m² park links the city to the Table Bay Harbour through a series of pedestrian routes, including one alongside the existing canal.

While the key objective was to re-establish the connection between the city and the sea, the vision was to provide a functional, convenient, comfortable, safe and unrestricted public space with recreational activities for all age groups

And there is indeed a lot to do - from stand-up-paddling, basketball, running, taking the kids for a swing or a picnic, shopping or taking a historic tour - all with the amazing backdrop of Table Mountain.

High-quality recreational spaces

Keen to provide high-quality facilities for all ages, the city installed a free public skate and scooter park as well a multi-court.

The skate and scooter park was built to the highest standards and provides a combination of elements including a bowl with spine and pump hump, quarter pipes, gaps, a small plaza with hubba's and rails to ensure hours of fun.

The multi-court, which is used for basketball and mini soccer games includes adjustable hoops to make it accessible for younger players.

Lighting to enjoy the facilities when the sun sets

High-quality lighting was essential so the facilities could be used on those long summer nights to cool down and during the winter months when the sun sets early.
The city wanted an urban lighting solution that would ensure high visual comfort but not make a large dent in the yearly budget. They wanted a low maintenance luminaire, built with high-quality materials to ensure durability and longevity.

The ZELA was perfect. The refined design of this luminaire harmoniously integrates the landscape during the day, bring a touch of elegance. By night, this energy-efficient indirect lighting solution delivers a pleasant, glare-free light to create an inviting space, where people feel safe and comfortable

Fitted with LEDs, ZELA has a low power consumption to save energy. It has also been designed to respect the key principles of circular economy, enabling the city to replace both the LED unit and the electronic assembly in the future to take advantage of future technology.

Safe and vibrant community park

The renovation of this area on the waterfront of Cape Town has provided visitors and locals with a much-needed recreational sanctuary where they can spend time outdoors practising their favourite sports or simple relaxing with a magnificent view of Table Mountain.

The lighting enhances the joyful character of the park, as well as ensuring that users feel safe and secure, and can continue to use the facilities of the park as natural light fades.
Both the local authorities and the community are delighted with the result.
